Kalamazoo, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Connar Tava and Shayne Whittington both tallied double-doubles as the Western Michigan Broncos took down the Cornell Big Red, 83-70, in a non-conference clash at University Arena.
Tava had 16 points and 13 rebounds while Whittington logged 14 points and 12 boards for WMU (5-2). David Brown also scored 16 points, while Austin Richie poured in 15 points on 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Nolan Cressler shot 10-of-20 with five 3-pointers for 27 points for the winless Big Red (0-8). Robert Hatter was also strong from 3-point range (6- of-11) on his way to 22 points.
WMU outshot Cornell in the first half, 61.9 percent to 31.4 percent, but it only managed to carry a slim 34-32 lead into intermission. The Big Red made 10 long-range buckets in the opening 20 minutes compared to just one for the Broncos.
The Broncos were again outperformed from the floor in the second stanza, 50 percent to 48.3 percent, but they were able to pull away with a 20-of-28 showing from the stripe.
WMU won the rebounding battle, 38-31, and dominated on points in the paint, 50-16.
