Final Score: Manhattan 86, South Carolina 68
Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - George Beamon erupted for a game-high 26 points, as the Manhattan Jaspers took out the South Carolina Gamecocks, 86-68, in a non-conference showdown at Colonial Life Arena.
Beamon finished the night shooting not only 3-of-4 behind the 3-point line, but also a perfect 7-of-7 at the free-throw line for the Jaspers (8-2), as they posted their fifth straight win. Michael Alvarado accounted for 20 points and six assists, shooting a near-perfect 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.
The Gamecocks (2-4) were led by Sindarius Thornwell with 17 points, although he converted just 3-of-9 from the floor as the team suffered a second consecutive defeat. Tyrone Johnson and Michael Carrera pitched in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
South Carolina opened the meeting on an 8-2 run but never led by more than six points. In fact, it wasn't long before the Jaspers assumed control, building a double-digit lead late in the first half en route to a 45-34 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Manhattan left no doubt by converting 52.4 percent from the field and 16-of-20 at the free-throw line, cruising to the comfortable road win.
Both squads turned the ball over 16 times on the night, but the visitors made up for those miscues by claiming a 34-22 scoring edge at the charity stripe.
The win for the Jaspers was their first against an SEC foe since taking out Florida in the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
