Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Mickey recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the LSU Tigers captured an 82-65 win over the Hawks of Saint Joseph's in opening-round action at the Old Spice Classic.
Andre Stringer posted 18 points and six assists for the Tigers (4-1), followed by Jarell Martin with 15 points and Johnny O'Bryant 11 and eight boards in the win.
The Hawks (2-2) were led by Ronald Roberts who produced a game-high 21 points and also collected seven rebounds, followed by Halil Kanacevic with 12 points and four steals.
For a brief moment early in the contest the Hawks owned a two-point advantage, but the team ended up missing all seven opportunities behind the 3-point line in the period and converted just 6-of-11 at the free-throw line, en route to a 46-30 deficit at the break.
After shooting 58.1 percent from the floor in the first half, including 8- of-13 (.625) beyond the arc, the Tigers turned to the charity stripe after intermission where they knocked down all but one of their 11 chances in order to cruise to the double-digit win.
In a game that featured four ties and seven lead changes, the Hawks cost themselves a shot at the win by shooting a mere 12-of-26 at the free-throw line.
With the victory the Tigers will now take on 21st-ranked Memphis in the semifinals on Friday, while St. Joseph's goes up against Siena.
