NCAA Game Summary - Mercer at Fairfield

Fairfield, CT (Sports Network) - Bud Thomas scored 13 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range to lead the Mercer Bears to a 64-59 win over the Fairfield Stags in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament at Alumni Hall.
Travis Smith netted 12 points and Monty Brown chipped in 10 for Mercer (26-11). Langston Hall dished out eight assists to offset a poor shooting performance (2-of-9) while Jakob Gollon and Daniel Coursey led the squad with six rebounds each. The Bears advance to Wednesday's Championship game where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between Oakland and Utah State.
Rakim Sanders led the way for Fairfield (22-15) with 16 points while Keith Matthews scored 14 and blocked four shots with Maurice Barrow chipping in 12 points. Colin Nickerson was the leader on the glass with eight rebounds.
Mercer went on an 18-4 run early in the first half and led by as many as 13 in the first twenty minutes. Fairfield hung around and trailed by only five, 30-25, at the break after shooting only 33.3 percent while the Bears connected on 46.2 percent of their field goal attempts. The Stags 7-1 edge on points from the free throw line kept the game within striking distance.
The Bears led for the entire second half but Fairfield cut the lead to one 50-49 with 9:17 left in regulation. Mercer then put together a 12-5 spurt to take a 62-54 lead and with the Stags going just 1-for-5 from the field the rest of the way, was able to hold on for the win.
Three point shooting was a major factor in the game with Mercer outscoring Fairfield 30-9 from beyond the arc. Mercer had the edge on the glass 35-31 but was guilty of a game-high 20 turnovers.
