NCAA Game Summary - Hawaii vs. Idaho
(Thursday, March 8)
Final Score: Hawaii 72, Idaho 70
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - A jumper by Hauns Brereton in the final seconds was just what Hawaii needed as the Rainbow Warriors slipped by Idaho, 72-70, in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Orleans Arena.
Brereton finished the afternoon with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the sixth- seeded Warriors (16-15), while Vander Joaquim paced the program with 20 points and a team-best 13 boards. Shaquille Stokes tacked on 17 points and three assists, but shot only 5-of-14 from the floor. Jeremiah Ostrowski delivered nine of the squad's 15 assists.
The third-seeded Vandals (18-13) were paced by Kyle Barone with 19 points, Stephen Madison 15 and Landon Tatum 12 points in the setback. Djim Bandoumel was responsible for a game-high 16 rebounds and blocked three shots, but he scored only six points on 2-of-9 shooting from the floor.
Hawaii led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half, but because the team shot only 1-of-6 behind the three-point line the Vandals were still within striking distance at the break, 35-28.
In the second half Idaho came storming back, using a 13-7 run over the first five minutes to draw to within a point. Over the final 12 minutes of the meeting the teams tied a total of five times, the last one coming at 70-70 on a layup by Barone with 22 seconds to play.
Following the conversion by Brereton with just seconds remaining, Idaho had one last chance to come out on top, but Madison turned the ball over as Hawaii sealed the deal.
The Warriors picked up the win despite shooting only 18-of-30 at the free- throw line and 2-of-10 beyond the arc.
With the victory the Warriors head to the semifinals on Friday and will face the New Mexico State Aggies who defeated Fresno State by a score of 65-49.
