NCAA Game Summary - Siena vs. Manhattan
(Saturday, March 3)
Final Score: Siena 84, Manhattan 82 (OT)
Springfield, MA (Sports Network) - Owen Wignot scored 22 points and hit some crucial shots as he helped guide the Siena Saints to an 84-82 overtime win against the Manhattan Jaspers in the quarterfinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at MassMutual Center.
Brandon Walters added 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots for the sixth-seeded Saints (14-16), while Rob Poole contributed 16 points. OD Anosike logged yet another double-double with 14 points and a team-best 10 boards.
The third-seeded Jaspers (20-12) were paced by George Beamon with a game-high 24 points, followed by Kidani Brutus with 13 and Rhamel Brown 12 points. Roberto Colonette and Emmy Andujar both registered 11 points, the latter clearing a game-high 15 boards and handing out six assists in the setback.
The Saints knocked down an impressive 55.6 percent from the field and 4-of-7 behind the three-point line in the first half, but with the Jaspers connecting on 8-of-14 shots beyond the arc in the period the lead was just two points for Siena at the break, 41-39.
The Saints extended their lead to as many as eight points in the second half, but still needed some clutch play down the stretch to ensure they would be moving on in the tournament.
Wignot knocked down a three-pointer with just under eight seconds remaining to knot the score at 78-78, but the Jaspers had one last chance to win the game in regulation. Brutus took the inbounds pass for Manhattan and circled around to the right side of the lane and set up for a medium-range jumper that spun inside the rim and came out, sending the game into the extra session.
Wignot played the hero in overtime as well as he knocked down a jumper midway through the period and then converted the first of his two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to give the Saints the two-point lead that they refused to relinquish.
The Saints are now set to face off against second-seeded Loyola-Maryland in the semifinals on Sunday afternoon for the right to play in the title game on Monday night.
