Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Cameron Moore posted a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded UAB Blazers past the 12th- seeded Tulane Green Wave to a 72-64 decision in their first round bout in the 2012 Conference USA Tournament at FedExForum.
Ovie Soko contributed a double-double of his own for UAB (15-15), as he scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory. Preston Purifoy chipped in 14 points to help the Blazers advanced to the quarterfinal round, where they will face the No. 4 seed, UCF, on Thursday.
Josh Davis paced Tulane (15-16) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Callahan added 11 points while Ricky Tarrant struggled, going 2-of-13 from the field and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc in the Green Wave's season ending loss.
Tulane took a 28-27 lead into halftime after it scored 20 points in the paint and seven points off of turnovers in the back-and-forth first period. The Blazers made 47.4 percent of their field goal tries in the opening half, but fell behind after they attempted 11 less shots.
UAB took control after the intermission by shooting 57.1 percent from the field and converting 19-of-25 at the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. The Green Wave could not keep up as they went 1-of-8 from three-point range in the second half. The Blazers built their lead up and lead 59-48 with 4:39 left to play. Tulane chipped away and Davis made a layup to make UAB's lead 65-62 with 1:29 left to go. However, UAB drained 7-of-8 at the foul line to hold off the Green Wave and advance to the next round.
The Blazers managed to come out on top despite attempts 24 less field goals in the contest. UAB's success came at the free throw line, where it outscored the Green Wave by 14 points.
