Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Carl Jones scored 23 points, leading five players in double figures, as Saint Joseph's delivered an 80-64 win over Charlotte in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at Hagan Arena.
Also hitting for double digits for the fifth-seeded Hawks (20-12) were Langston Galloway with 18 points, Halil Kanacevic 16, and both Ronald Roberts and C.J. Aiken with 10 points apiece. Kanacevic filled out his stat line with a game-high 11 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots in order to offset his five turnovers. With the victory the Hawks are now headed to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ where they will clash with fourth-seeded St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon.
The 12th-seeded 49ers (13-17) were paced by Chris Braswell with 20 points and seven rebounds, followed by DeMario Mayfield with 12 points and another seven boards of his own.
Saint Joseph's scored the first points of the night and never looked back, the team shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 6-of-13 behind the three-point line in the first half in order to take as 34-27 lead at the break. Neither team made a single free throw through the opening 20 minutes.
The Hawks exploded in the second half with a staggering 68.2 percent accuracy from the floor, allowing them to cruise to the comfortable win.
The hosts made good on 54.7 percent from the field overall and 10-of-21 on the perimeter, while limiting the visitors to just 5-of-19 shooting beyond the arc.
