NCAA Game Summary - Washington at U-C-L-A
(Saturday, March 3)
Final Score: UCLA 75, Washington 69
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Lazeric Jones scored 20 points, and the UCLA Bruins played the role of spoiler in the regular-season finale with a 75-69 win over Washington in Pac-12 play at the L.A. Sports Arena.
Travis Wear scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Bruins (18-13, 11-7 Pac-12), who were playing in the wake of recent turmoil stemming from a Sports Illustrated expose that brought to light a dysfunctional program. Tyler Lamb helped out with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
C.J. Wilcox led all scorers with 22 points, and Terrence Ross tallied 18 points and four steals for Washington. That duo combined to shoot 8-of-15 from beyond the arc, while Tony Wroten finished with 14 points and five assists in a losing effort.
With the loss, the Huskies (21-9, 14-4) missed out on an opportunity to clinch the Pac-12 regular-season title outright. They can still earn the top seed in the conference tournament if Cal loses at Stanford on Sunday. If Cal wins, UW will share the regular-season crown but the Golden Bears get the top seed thanks to their head-to-head win against the Huskies.
Washington led by as many as nine with 7:17 to play in the opening frame as both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the first half. UW led 47-44 at the break.
However, the Huskies were out-scored 31-22 in the second half as they shot just 9-of-28 from the floor (.321). UW's Darnell Gant missed a potential go- ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining, and the Bruins sealed it with free throws.
UCLA snapped a four-game losing streak to the Huskies. Still, the Bruins will likely need to win next week's conference tournament in order to make the NCAA Tournament field.
