Garland, TX (Sports Network) - Christian Williams scored 22 points as the
Jackson State Tigers slipped by the Alabama State Hornets, 66-59, in the
quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at the
Also scoring in double figures for second-seeded Jackson State (11-17) was
Jeff Stubbs who tallied 18 points and now with the victory the Tigers head to
the semifinals on Friday where they will challenge Prairie View.
The fifth-seeded Hornets (10-22) were paced by Phillip Crawford who tallied
18 points and pulled down nine rebounds, followed by Denzell McDaniel and
Joshua Freelove with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Bobby Brown shot just 2-
of-8 from the field and finished with gout points, but he did contribute with
a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Tigers ran out to an 8-3 lead four minutes into the meeting, but it wasn't
long before Alabama State turned the tables with a 13-2 scoring run,
eventually leading to a 31-30 edge for the Hornets at the break.
JSU shot only 39.3 percent from the floor in the second half, including a
disappointing 1-of-10 beyond the arc, but the Tigers saved themselves with 13-
of-14 shooting at the free-throw line, en route to the seven-point victory.
Ahead by as many as 11 points in the second half, Jackson State outscored the
Hornets at the charity stripe, 23-11, on the day overall.
