Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Eitan Chemerinski came off the bench to score
19 points as the Cornell Big Red picked up an 84-78 victory over the Longwood
Lancers as part of the championship round in the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational
at Orleans Arena.
Errick Peck and Shonn Miller each added 14 points for Cornell (3-4), which has
now won two straight after a four-game losing slide. Peck also had 10 rebounds
to notch a double-double while Nolan Cressler netted 12 points.
Michael Kessens paced Longwood (1-5) with 20 points and 14 rebounds in the
loss. Nik Brown and Tristan Carey tallied 19 points each while Karl Ziegler
chipped in 10.
The Big Red controlled the first have completely and led by as many as 18
before taking a 42-30 lead into halftime. Longwood fell behind after shooting
just 37.9 percent from the floor while allowing Cornell to convert 18-of-32 of
its field goal attempts.
The Lancers trailed by a double-digit margin for the majority of the second
half. They made a late rally effort and cut the deficit to four points in the
closing seconds, but Peck and Cressler combined to go 6-of-6 at the charity
stripe in the final 10 seconds of play to secure the win. Cornell made 12-
of-15 attempts at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes to protect its
advantage.
The Big Red's reserves scored 46 points in the contest while Longwood got just
12 points from its bench.
