Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Trevis Simpson dropped in 30 points to lead
the UNC Greensboro Spartans over the Samford Bulldogs, 66-64, in a Southern
Conference showdown at Greensboro Coliseum.
Derrell Armstrong added nine points and Kayel Locke pulled down nine rebounds
for the Spartans (5-13, 3-4 SoCon).
For the Bulldogs (7-13, 5-2), Tim Williams finished with 19 points and nine
rebounds, Tyler Hood scored 14 points, Clide Geffrard, Jr. added 13 points,
and Raijon Kelly chipped in 12 points and six assists. The loss snapped a
four-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.
UNCG shot just 41.9 percent from the floor but had a 10-6 scoring advantage at
the free-throw line, as it went into the break leading 39-34. The Spartans
went 3-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half. Samford was held to 40
percent shooting from the field and 4-of-12 from beyond the 3-point arc in the
opening 20 minutes.
After halftime, the Spartans struggled from the field, making just 33.3
percent of their field goal tries and missing all but one of their five 3-
point attempts. The Bulldogs had a somewhat better shooting half, hitting 40
of their shots from the floor, including 3-of-10 from 3-point distance. After
trailing for almost the entire half, the Bulldogs were down just two in the
final minute and had a chance to go ahead in the closing seconds, but Geffrard
Jr.'s 3-point shot with seven seconds to play was off the mark and UNCG held
on for the win.
The Spartans had a slight edge on points in the paint, 22-20. They also
outrebounded the Bulldogs, 39-35.
