NCAA Game Summary - Western Carolina at Furman

Final Score: Western Carolina 79, Furman 65

Greenville, SC (Sports Network) - Led by 24 points from Trey Sumler, the Western Carolina Catamounts defeated the Furman Paladins, 79-65, as both teams opened Southern Conference action at Timmons Arena.

For the Catamounts (3-4, 1-0 SoCon), Tom Tankelewicz added 17 points, Josh Mendenhall scored 12 and Tawaski King chipped in with 11 points. Sumler was also responsible for seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Colin Reddick led the Paladins (2-4, 0-1) with 15 points and a game-high nine boards, while Stephen Croone finished with 12 points and Bobby Austin and Kendrec Ferrara each scored 10 off the bench.

Furman shot just 25 percent from the field and missed all but one of its 10 three-point attempts. Western Carolina was somewhat better, connecting on 37.9 percent of its field goal tries, as it took a 27-21 lead into the break.

After intermission the Paladins improved greatly, making 46.7 percent of their field goal attempts, but continued to have problems from long range, converting only 1-of-6 beyond the arc. Unfortunately for the home team, the Catamounts got hot in the second half, hitting 58.1 percent from the floor and 6-of-11 from three-point range, as they were able to cruise to victory.

The Catamounts converted 19 turnovers by the Paladins into 17 points and also scored 18 points on the fast break, compared to just two points for Furman.
