NCAA Game Summary - Youngstown State at Detroit

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Howard, Jr. poured in a team-high 24 points and knocked down the game-winning bucket in the final minute of overtime, as the Detroit Titans outlasted the Youngstown State Penguins, 83-81, in Horizon League action at Calihan Hall.
Howard shot 9-of-18 from the field and connected on all four of his free-throw attempts for Detroit (12-14, 5-6 Horizon), winners of back-to-back games. Evan Bruinsma put up 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the hosts, Jarod Williams scored 14 points and Ugochukwu Njoku grabbed 11 rebounds.
For YSU (13-12, 4-6), which has lost three straight, Shawn Amiker led all scorers with 25 points, while Kendrick Perry stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. DJ Cole and Kamren Belin netted 13 points apiece, with Cole pitching in seven assists as well, while Bobby Hain logged eight points and 13 rebounds.
The first half ended with Detroit leading comfortably, 40-30, after it outshot YSU from the field, 46.4 percent to 32 percent, which included an 18-6 scoring advantage from 3-point range.
The Titans continued to lead throughout the second half but could never pull away. They held a three-point lead in the final minute before the Penguins tied the game up at 71 with 10 seconds left on an Amiker 3-pointer. Detroit missed two field goals in the waning seconds of regulation and the game went to overtime.
YSU opened up an early lead in the extra session before Howard connected on the game-winning bucket with 18 seconds left. Perry had a chance to tie the game with eight seconds to play but went just 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. After a 1-of-2 trip to the stripe for Detroit, the Penguins had one last opportunity in the waning seconds, but after Belin grabbed an offensive rebound off a Perry miss, he failed to connect on the put back as the Titans held on.
Detroit won the rebounding battle, 42-35, and outscored YSU in the paint, 28-24.
