Evanston, IL (Sports Network) - John Shurna had 18 points and broke Northwestern's all-time scoring record, leading the Wildcats to a 64-53 win over Minnesota at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Shurna (1,902) came into the matchup 16 points shy of Billy McKinney (1974-77), but attained the record in a fitting way by draining a three- pointer to extend Northwestern's lead to 50-40 midway through the second half.
Dave Sobolewski led the way with 22 points for the Wildcats (16-10, 6-8 Big Ten), who lost their previous two games. Drew Crawford scored 11 in the win.
Julian Welch, who made half his 10 three-point tries, had 21 points for Minnesota (17-10, 5-9), which lost its third in a row. Joe Coleman had 12 points in defeat.
The Wildcats, who were outrebounded 41-20, were able to win thanks to holding the Golden Gophers to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, this after Northwestern led 36-28 at the intermission.
Minnesota went 5-of-17 from beyond the arc, while Northwestern was 10-of-27. The Wildcats held a 24-8 margin in points off turnovers.
