Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Richie Edwards netted 19 points to lead the Valparaiso Crusaders to a 74-65 victory over the Illinois-Chicago Flames in a Horizon League battle at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Matt Kenney finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Valpo (19-9, 12-4 HL). Kevin Van Wijk contributed 11 points as the Crusaders won their fifth game in six outings.
Hayden Humes and Gary Talton scored 15 points each for UIC (7-18, 3-12). Darrin Williams added 13 points and seven boards as the Flames lost their third game in a row.
UIC took a 37-27 lead into the intermission after it shot 51.7 percent from the field including 5-of-10 from three-point range in the opening period. The Crusaders made 50 percent of its field goals in the first half, but attempted nine less shots.
Valpo overcame the deficit after the break by shooting 72.2 percent from the floor including 8-of-9 from three-point range in the second half. The Flames saw their lead diminish as they made only 37.5 percent of their field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Despite the loss, UIC held a 29-20 advantage in the rebounding battle.
