GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars will try to rebound from a tough loss, as they visit the Holmes Center in Boone, North Carolina for a Southern Conference showdown with the Mountaineers of Appalachian State.
Charleston went on the road this past Thursday night and took Elon to double- overtime, only to walk away with a 99-98 loss. This afternoon's tilt wraps up a three-game road swing for the Cougars, who are an even 6-6 outside of their own building. However, they have dropped five of their last six contests overall to fall to 5-7 in conference play.
Appalachian State is 5-6 in SoCon action and has split its last four outings. The Mountaineers were also in action on Thursday night, losing to Samford in a 53-52 final. They'll wrap up a three-game homestand tonight and try to improve on their 7-3 mark at the Holmes Center.
The College of Charleston leads the all-time series with Appalachian State, 16-11.
The Cougars managed to erase a 23-point second-half deficit to force overtime on Thursday. They dialed up the defensive intensity, forcing 10 turnovers in that stretch to take Elon completely out of sync. Andrew Lawrence led all scorers with a career-high 32 points, with 16 of those points coming during Charleston's second-half charge. He even scored the tying bucket with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. CofC again rallied in the first extra session, erasing a four-point deficit in the final minute to extend the game another period. In the second overtime, the Cougars tried to erase a seven-point margin with 1:06 to play, eventually making it a 99-98 game on Lawrence's three-pointer with 17 seconds to play. Sophomore James Carlton then came up with a steal and swung the ball over to Lawrence for a potential game-winning jumper, but his shot was blocked as time expired. All in all, the Cougars showed a valiant effort after allowing Elon to shoot 68 percent from the floor and 7-of-8 from three-point range in the opening stanza to take a seemingly comfortable 51-34 lead into the break. They'll attempt to get off to a better start here behind top scorers Antwaine Wiggins (16.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Lawrence (13.3 ppg), while trying to get Trent Wiedeman (11.0 ppg, 8.7 rpg) going down low.
ASU boasts a similar trio in Omar Carter, Jamaal Trice and Andre Williamson. Carter leads the team with 13.5 ppg and had been enjoying some success coming off the bench of late, but he managed just six points in Thursday's loss. That role change began as a benching of sorts by head coach Jason Capel, and with solid results initially, he was content to keep that lineup change in tact. But after Thursday's showing in which the offense sputtered all around, Capel will need to get more production from his top scorer, whether it be in a starting role or extended minutes off the bench. Trice (11.3 ppg) is the team's top threat from beyond the arc, where he is shooting at a 41.2 percent clip (40-of-97), while Williamson (10.2 ppg) is the leading rebounder, pulling down 7.2 boards per tilt. But against Samford, forward Nathan Healy was the only player in double figures as he finished with 14 points and six caroms. The Mountaineers shot just 38.5 percent from the floor and made only five free throws in eight attempts for the game. ASU led by seven early in the second half, but Samford turned the tide with a 13-2 run and maintained a slim lead over the game's final six minutes.
Both of these teams suffered one-point losses their last time out, and both figure to be hungry for some redemption here. Expect the Mountaineers to try and get Carter going early and force Charleston to play from behind.
