GAME NOTES: It might be their first-ever meeting with the host team, but the Morehead State Eagles are trying to make it three in a row on Bucknell's home floor as the two teams clash in the final round of the Legends Classic at Sojka Pavilion.
Yesterday, the Eagles registered their first win of the season over another Division I program as they took down the Princeton Tigers by a score of 68-56. A day earlier the team topped Division II West Alabama (61-52), and last week it was a 100-48 triumph over NAIA foe Asbury that earned MSU its first win of 2011-12.
As for the Bison, they began this season with consecutive losses against Minnesota and Vanderbilt on the road, but since then the team has turned the corner with four straight victories, including an 87-50 thumping of West Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
Terrance Hill scored 16 points to lead the Morehead State Eagles to a 12-point win over the Princeton Tigers as part of the Legends Classic at Sojka Pavilion yesterday afternoon. Milton Chavis added 12 points off the bench for Morehead State, while Lamont Austin netted 11 as he converted all three of his field goal tries and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Hill has been the leading scorer for the Eagles in three straight games and five of six outings overall this season, averaging 16.2 ppg in the process. A 44.4 percent shooter from three-point range, Hill is the only player on the team scoring in double figures right now as the squad generates 65.8 ppg, but also giving up 67.0 ppg to the competition.
Bryson Johnson connected on 9-of-15 shots from three-point range, finishing with a game-high 27 points as the Bucknell Bison posted the 27-point win over the West Alabama Tigers on Saturday. Also scoring in double figures for the Bison were Cameron Ayers with 20 points, Ben Brackney 12 in 13 minutes off the bench and Joe Willman 10 points in the triumph. The Bison finished with a 46-33 rebounding advantage and also connected on a staggering 17-of-34 from three-point range. Through six games Bucknell is shooting 40.7 percent from three-point range and 47.8 percent from the floor overall, which is considerably higher than the competition which has been limited to 38.1 percent from the floor and 29.6 percent out on the perimeter. Mike Muscala is responsible for 13.8 ppg and is also tops on the unit with 8.5 rpg, helping to give the Bison a rebounding advantage of almost six per game.
Morehead State has caught the right teams at the right time in this tournament, until now that is. The Eagles will have a tough time defending Bucknell on the perimeter and when MSU does extend to the outside, that will be when Muscala strikes for the hosts.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Bucknell 70, Morehead State 61
