GAME NOTES: The Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they take on the Wyoming Cowboys today in the Jim Thorpe Classic in Laramie.
Maryland-Eastern Shore's last outing resulted in a 73-54 defeat at the hands of Louisiana Tech. The Hawks now own a 1-5 record after splitting their first two games to start the season. UMES continued to struggle offensively in its last outing, as the team shot only 38.3 percent from the floor and 20 percent from beyond the arc in the loss to Louisiana Tech. At the defensive end of the court, UMES allowed the Bulldogs to make 17-of-29 shots in the second half.
Wyoming put forth a solid effort in its first action of this event, taking down the Portland State Vikings in a 65-51 final. The Cowboys improved to 4-1 with the win and will try to add on as the round-robin tournament continues. Wyoming had an excellent offensive performance against Portland State as it shot 50.9 percent from the floor en route to the victory. Wyoming's ball movement was superb in the contest as it had 14 assists and just eight turnovers. The Cowboys allowed Portland State to shoot 46.2 percent from the floor, but forced the Vikings into 18 turnovers to build a wide lead.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between Wyoming and UMES on the hardwood.
Louis Bell had scored in double figures in four straight games heading into the Louisiana Tech contest. Bell's streak ended as he was an ice cold 1-of-8 from the floor in the game as he finished with just three points. Percy Woods and Hillary Haley each scored 15 points in the game, but the Hawks struggle even worse when Bell disappears.
Wyoming put forth a complete effort in the Portland State game as four players scored in double figures. Adam Waddell was quite efficient as he shot 6-of-7 from the floor on his way to 15 points. Luke Martinez scored 13 and also grabbed six rebounds. Leonard Washington tallied 12 points and Francisco Cruz scored 11 on 5-of-8 shooting.
Wyoming's unselfish style of play and precise shooting is going to be very tough to stop. The Hawks are struggling and will need Bell to step up if they want to challenge the Cowboys on their home floor.
