GAME NOTES: The Drexel Dragons and Winthrop Eagles will each attempt to salvage a game in this tournament, as they meet each other in final round action of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

Drexel has lost both of its matchups at the Paradise Jam, falling 61-56 to Norfolk State on Friday and 49-35 to Virginia on Saturday. The Dragons had a fine defensive performance against the Cavaliers, but its offensive woes were apparent: Drexel shot just 25.9 percent from the field, and were led by Frantz Massenat's 12 points.

Winthrop has also dropped both of its games in St. Thomas, and remains winless on the year. The Eagles lost 95-73 to Marquette in the tournament opener, followed by a 66-62 loss to Drake in the second round of the tournament on Saturday. Andre Jones had a career-high 29 points in the loss to Marquette. Reggie Middleton scored 26 points to lead the Eagles in the loss to Drake.

This is the first meeting between Winthrop and Drake.

Massenat went 4-of-12 from the field (2-of-6 from three-point range) to earn his 12 points against Virginia, while Samme Givens had a nice outing with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Drexel's offensive problems were profound; the Dragons shot just 14-of-54 from the floor on the day, including 4-of-22 in the first half and 10-of-32 in the second half. Drexel also shot just 3-of-21 from three-point range. Drexel played pretty well defensively, holding Virginia to 35.9 percent shooting, including just 4-of-17 from the floor in the second half.

In their last outing, Winthrop battled Drake down to the wire despite shooting just 39.2 percent from the field to Drake's 54.1 percent. Winthrop did connect on 6-of-15 three-pointers, an Middleton hit 2-of-4 en route to his game-high 26 points. Jones, who had the game of his career against Marquette, came off the bench to shoot 3-of-8 from the field and score 11 points, to complement his four assists and two rebounds. Drake edged Winthrop on the boards, 30-27.

Both of these teams have clearly struggled shooting the ball in the Paradise Jam, and this game will be a good measuring stick as both clubs head back to the mainland for the rest of the season. Winthrop has a couple of dynamic perimeter scorers, while Drexel is still trying to find its offensive identity. This should be a low-scoring affair that displays quality defense.
