The Huskies are 1-2 after falling to host Louisiana in the opening round of the Beryl Shipley Classic. Before facing the Ragin' Cajuns, Houston Baptist began its season with a loss to Campbell and an overtime-win over Bethune- Cookman. Houston Baptist finished 5-26 overall and 2-12 in the Great West in 2010-2011. Ron Cottrell is 396-256 as he is in the early part of his 21st season with Houston Baptist. The Huskies moved into the NCAA Division I ranks in 2009-2010 after years of being a perennial powerhouse in the NAIA ranks.

J.P. Piper is now in his eighth year as the head coach of Nicholls State with a career record of 78-129. The Colonels 14-14 finished in 2010-2011 and is returning five-of-seven of their letter winners. Nicholls State is 0-3 to start the year after road losses at Louisiana State and Tulane before falling in its opening game of the Beryl Shipley Classic to Cal State Fullerton.

The last time Nicholls State faced the Huskies was February 21, 1987 as it left with a a 78-77 win in Thibodaux. The two teams played each other 18 times from 1969-87, with HBU holding an 11-7 advantage in the series history.

Joe Latas was leading the Huskies with an average of 18 points and 10 rebounds per game heading into the Louisiana game. The Ragin' Cajuns figured the senior big man out as he was held to just nine points on 12.5 percent shooting. Tyler Russell scored in double-digits for the second consecutive game against Louisiana as he finished with 15 off the bench to lead the Huskies. Freshman Ronald March had the best game of his young career with 12 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes of action. Houston Baptist shot terribly as a team as it made just 29 percent of its attempts in the game. The Huskies did make 24- of-29 free throws in the contest, but they will need to shoot better from the field if they hope to improve their chances of winning.

Chris Talkington led the Colonels against Cal State Fullerton in their opening game of the Beryl Shipley Classic with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting in just 19 minutes due to foul trouble. Trevon Lewis added an efficient 10 points off the bench on 3-of-4 shooting. Nicholls State improved its shooting percentage against the Titans to 46.9 percent from the 34 percent shooting performance against Tulane. The Colonels were killed on the glass as they were outrebounded by the Titans by 13.

Nicholls State is still seeking its first victory of the season. The Colonels will be able to win if they stop Latas as well as Louisiana did. However, if Latas gets it going it could mean an 0-4 start for Nicholls State.
