Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Freshman forward Anthony Davis finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, leading second-ranked Kentucky to a 108-58 rout of Marist in its season-opener.
Marquis Teague, another freshman, added 16 points for the Wildcats (1-0), who went 29-9 and reached the Final Four last season. They lost to Connecticut, the eventual national champion, by one point in a national semifinal.
Doron Lamb had 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the victory.
Isaiah Morton had 13 points to lead Marist (0-1), which won seven games over the previous two seasons. Dorvell Carter was the other Red Foxes player in double figures with 12 points.
The first half was high-scoring and fairly close, especially toward the beginning. Chavaughn Lewis' jumper nearly nine minutes in pulled Marist even, at 21-21.
Kentucky head coach John Calipari said he didn't like how his team started.
"One of the things I had to explain to this team -- we've got a lot of young guys, I was just disappointed that the older guys don't understand that anybody that comes in this building," Calipari said. "This is a big deal for them to play here, and they play out of their minds, every team we play."
Kentucky scored 11 of the next 13 points to start to create some distance, but the Red Foxes stayed within single digits. They were within 38-34 after Adam Kemp made a layup with four minutes left.
However, Kentucky's Eloy Vargas followed with a jumper. Terrence Jones then drilled a three-pointer and added a dunk for a 45-34 Wildcats advantage.
"I thought we did a good job in the first half," said Marist head coach Chuck Martin. "We had a good game plan to spread them out, we had been watching the two previous exhibition games where teams were settling for threes and we were preaching -- don't settle for threes, drive the ball, get to the rim."
Morton's subsequent jumper ended the first-half scoring, but Kentucky scored the first six points after the break and never looked back.
Davis' dunk with just over 15 minutes to play widened the Wildcats' lead to 61-42 and started a 13-0 run. Lamb's three-pointer ended it, and Kentucky cruised during the final 12 minutes.
Jones and Wildcats teammate Stacey Poole were involved in a car accident early Friday but were not injured. However, the incident led to Calipari instituting a curfew...Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 15 points with seven rebounds for Kentucky, while Kyle Wiltjer added 14 points...The Wildcats held a 51-29 rebounding edge and held Marist to 32 percent shooting.
