Final Score: Hampton 45, Winthrop 44

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Kwame Morgan tallied 12 points as the Hampton Pirates defeated the Winthrop Eagles, 45-44, in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Darrion Pellum added 10 points for Hampton (1-1).

Reggie Middleton racked up 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in the heart-breaking loss for Winthrop (1-2).

Hampton led 23-16 at intermission after holding the Eagles to 5-of-24 shooting from the field in the first half.

Winthrop scored 13 points during one second-half span to take a 33-28 advantage, but eight unanswered points by Hampton down the stretch proved to be the difference.

The Eagles earned a 36-31 rebounding edge in the tilt, and both teams committed 13 turnovers.
