Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Alex Tyus scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Florida Gators to a 76-60 win over the American University Eagles in a non-league showdown at the O'Connell Center.
The Gators (9-3) also received 19 points from Kenny Boyton, while Vernon Macklin chipped in with a career-high 18 points in the win.
American (2-11) was paced by Nick Hendra who scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a losing effort. Vlad Moldoveanu also got involved, scoring 14 points for the Eagles.
The Gators took control of the contest in the first half, shooting 46.9 percent from the floor to take a commanding 39-18 lead at the break. Defensively the home team held the Eagles to a total of just four field goals.
Florida kept the pressure on in the second stanza, knocking down 13-of-30 shots from the floor, en route to a 16-point victory.
The Gators, who fell out of the rankings in the latest AP poll, were tenacious on defense, limiting the Eagles to just 19-of-49 shooting from the field, while forcing 18 turnovers in the win.
