Harangody, Notre Dame cruise past Savannah State
South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Luke Harangody hit 13-of-14 from the free throw line en route to a game-high 23 points to go with 13 rebounds, as the No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish cruised to an 81-49 thumping of Savannah State.
Tory Jackson and Ryan Ayers each added 10 points as Notre Dame (9-2) wrapped up a perfect three-game homestand before opening up its brutal Big East schedule at DePaul on December 31.
Chris Linton was the only Tigers player in double figures with 14 points as Savannah State (7-5) had a brief two-game winning streak snapped.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting poorly as the Irish led 7-6 five minutes into the game. The hosts went on a 9-2 spurt that was capped by an Ayers layup with 7 1/2 minutes left in the half to gain some breathing room.
Ayers' three-pointer just before the break made it a 37-21 game, and the Irish pulled away early in the second half.
A 16-2 run highlighted by three-balls from Jackson, Ayers and Luke Zeller with just over 12 minutes remaining pushed the difference to 55-29, and the game was never in question from that point on.
The Irish extended their home-winning streak to 43 consecutive games... Harangody made just 5-of-14 shots from the field...Kyle McAlarney, who came in averaging 18.1 points per game, netted just eight points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field in the win...Notre Dame owned a 44-21 rebounding edge.
