NCAA Game Summary - Savannah State at Georgetown
(Monday, December 8th)
Final Score: (19) Georgetown 100, Savannah State 38
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - DaJuan Summers, Austin Freeman and Jessie Sapp each tallied 14 points, as No. 19 Georgetown pounded Savannah State, 100-38, at the Verizon Center.
Greg Monroe added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Hoyas (6-1), who combined a stifling defense with a high-octane offense to roll from the tip.
Raye Bailey had his second straight solid outing with 14 points. Bailey poured in 17 of his team's 37 points in the school's loss to Saint Louis last Saturday.
The Hoyas, who gave up 12 points in the first half to American on Saturday, almost equaled the feat Monday.
"We did what we needed to do to sustain it. I think guys on the team know what coach always says, it's about us and I think we bought in to that. So guys know that no matter who the opposing team is, we need to do the things we do, the way we need to do them," said Summers.
Georgetown controlled every facet of the game against the Tigers, who looked little like the team that lost by just two points in overtime at Michigan on November 29.
The Hoyas made 21-of-29 field goals in the first half, shooting 72.4 percent from the floor over the initial 20 minutes. Savannah State missed eight shots in the first six minutes, failing to convert on 8-of-9 to start the contest.
Freeman's three-point play with just over 14 minutes to go gave the Hoyas a 17-3 early edge. Savannah State then went ice cold over a three-plus minute stretch, and Georgetown rattled off nine consecutive points for a lopsided 30-7 margin.
After Rashad Hassan converted a slam, the Hoyas poured on 15 straight points, capping an extended burst of 24-2. Sapp's lay-in concluded the run for a 45-9 lead.
Bailey's trey, with 14 ticks left, ended the first half scoring for Savannah State, which still trailed 57-15 going into the break, and the Hoyas cruised to victory in the second half.
