Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Tyler Hansbrough scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of game action, as top-ranked North Carolina rolled over South Carolina State, 110-64, in second-round action at the Las Vegas Invitational.
The first two rounds of this tournament -- played at designated campus venues -- have been kind to the preseason All-American candidate Hansbrough, giving him the opportunity to bolster his statistics while catching plenty of wind in the second half.
The forward scored 27 points in 26 minutes of action in Sunday's 107-72 pounding of Iona, then turned around with a 7-of-12 performance from the floor and a 12-of-14 effort from the charity stripe Tuesday. Wayne Ellington scored 19 points, Danny Green added 15 and Alex Stepheson donated 11 points and nine rebounds for the Tar Heels (3-0), who move on to the semifinals in Las Vegas.
"Tyler (Hansbrough) was impressive getting the ball and from the free throw line he was perfect," said North Carolina head coach Roy Williams. "We are more gifted than South Carolina State is and we are supposed to win. I was pleased with our intensity."
Everett Spencer led the Bulldogs (0-4) with 12 points while Carrio Bennett and Jessie Burton each scored 11. Junior center Chris Miller-Williams -- who scored 11 points in the club's last game against Jacksonville -- was held scoreless with two rebounds.
South Carolina State actually hit its first two three-pointers -- it made 7- of-11 on the night -- and built a brief 8-4 lead before the high-octane North Carolina attack took over.
Stepheson's layup capped nine points in a row for the 13-8 lead, and the Tar Heels never looked back. Back-to-back buckets from Ty Lawson and Ellington staked UNC to a 33-16 lead, and a three-point play by Lawson several minutes later pushed the edge to 53-27.
North Carolina led 61-34 at the half.
The second half became a mere formality as the Tar Heels ripped off eight straight points capped by Hansbrough's three-point play and Deon Thompson's layup for a 74-48 lead.
North Carolina cruised to the finish line from there.
Lawson finished with nine points and eight assists to just three turnovers. Deon Thompson added eight points as 11 Tar Heels scored in the rout...UNC shot 53.7 percent from the floor and caused 32 Bulldog turnovers...South Carolina State made just 40.4 percent of its shots.
