Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Mardy Collins scored 18 points and Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney picked up his 500th victory at Temple, as the Owls opened their season with a 69-37 demolition of Army at the Liacouras Center.
The game was the first round of the Preseason NIT. Mark Tyndale and Dustin Salisbery each scored 13 points for the Owls (1-0), who advanced to play UCLA on Thursday. UCLA beat New Mexico State, 83-70, on Tuesday.
Chaney, who began his 24th season at Temple, is 500-283 all-time at the school. His win on Tuesday was his 725th overall, moving Chaney past legendary DePaul coach Ray Meyer and into 14th place on the NCAA Division I all-time list.
"I know Ray and never thought about passing him," Chaney said. "I don't think you give it too much thought. When you start thinking about reaching those milestones, you fail the kids. That should be your most important concern, the kids you are working with."
Enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001, Chaney returned four starters this year from a team that posted a 16-14 record and advanced to the 2005 NIT to extend the school's postseason appearance string to 23 consecutive seasons. A Chaney-coached team has never reached the Final Four, even though he does have 15 20-win seasons at Temple. He also coached at Cheyney State.
"For me, it's just a lot of memories," Chaney said. "Looking at someone like Mark Macon, who helped get me started here many years ago, it makes you get a little melancholy when you see people who are still around working with you. That perhaps, is more important than anything else."
Matt Bell had 12 points to lead Army (0-1), which shot just 12-of-42 (28.6 percent) from the field. The Black Knights posted a 3-24 mark last season.
The Owls won the game despite being outrebounded 34-22. Temple went 9-for-22 from three-point range and made 42.9 percent of its shots, while Army was 3- of-23 from behind the arc.
Temple shot 50 percent (13-of-26) in the first half and led 38-12 at the intermission before cruising in the second half. Army had 21 turnovers to just four for the Owls. Temple had 22 points off turnovers, compared to zero for the Black Knights.
