Washington, D.C. (SportsNetwork.com) - Maurice Creek knocked down a jumper as time expired to lift the George Washington Colonials to a 77-75 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in a non-conference matchup that was part of the BB&T Classic at the Verizon Center.
Creek finished with a game-high 25 points for George Washington (8-1), which also received 13 points, nine assists and eight rebounds from Joe McDonald. Kethan Savage added 14 points while Isaiah Armwood recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.
Dez Wells led the Terrapins (5-4) with 16 points before fouling out in the second half. Jake Layman chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Evan Smotrycz contributed 11 points and Roddy Peters had 11 points and three steals.
The Colonials took a 41-29 lead into halftime after they shot 41.9 percent from the floor and converted 12-of-15 attempts at the free-throw line in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. Maryland connected on only 30 percent of its field goal attempts before the intermission.
The Terrapins fought back after the break by hitting on 47.1 percent of their field goal attempts and 11-of-14 at the charity stripe. The Colonials made 14- of-18 at the free-throw line, but missed all three of their attempts from 3- point range in the second half. After Creek put George Washington ahead, 75-73, Peters tied the score with a pair of made free-throw attempts on the other end with only eight seconds left in regulation. Creek connected on his game-winner jump shot on the following possession.
The Colonials assisted 15 of their 24 made field goals while Maryland assisted only seven of its 25 makes from the floor. Both sides finished with 36 points in the paint.
