El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - The duo of Marcus James and Josten Crow tallied 12 points apiece to lead the Sam Houston State Bearkats to a 64-48 victory over the Western New Mexico Mustangs as part of the Sun Bowl Invitational at the Don Haskins Center.
Lance Pevehouse added 11 points off the bench in the win for SHSU (7-5), while Marcus Williams chipped in 10 points. The Bearcats snapped a two-game slide with the victory.
Chad Carter scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Western New Mexico (3-9) in the loss, the third consecutive for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs were held to a miserable 27.6 percent from the floor during the first period of play, opening a 35-22 halftime lead for the Bearkats.
In the second half, the Bearkats shot just 35.5 percent from the field but the halftime deficit proved too great for the Mustangs to overcome.
The Mustangs hit a mere 29.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the loss, including a 6-of-33 performance from long range.
