GAME NOTES: The Navy Midshipmen and UC Irvine Anteaters will meet up at the Bren Events Center this evening, in sub-regional round action of the 2K Sports Challenge benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
The Midshipmen opened the season with two straight lopsided losses to Texas (83-52) and Buffalo (88-46), but finally got in the win column in their last outing, topping Neumann University on Tuesday, 74-62.
The Anteaters are still in search of their first victory on the season as well as the first under new head coach Russell Turner. IC Irvine fell to nationally-ranked Illinois (79-65) and USC (62-49) on the road thus far. They have however, been strong at home, winning 95 of their last 130 games at the Bren Events Center.
This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
After getting blown out by Texas and Buffalo to open the 2010-11 season, the Midshipmen finally put together a strong outing, topping Neumann University this week, 74-62. Senior guard Greg Brown dominated, finishing with career- highs in points (18) and rebounds (11) for his first-career double-double. Junior guard Jordan Sugars poured in 16 points in support. Navy did a great job defensively, forcing Neumann into 25 turnovers. The offensive numbers aren't awe-inspiring thus far for Navy, with the team shooting a mere .307 from the floor and averaging just 57.3 ppg. Brown is the only player on the roster currently in double figures with 11.7 ppg. Sugars is closing in however, at 9.7 ppg.
The Anteaters struggled at USC due to getting absolutely dominated on the boards. UCI was outrebounded by the hometown Trojans 47-26. Senior Pavol Losonsky led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the floor. Junior Eric Wise added 12 points, while senior Patrick Rembert chipped in with nine points. The Anteaters struggled to find their stroke, shooting a mere .346 from the floor in the game, including .250 from behind the arc (5-of-20). The team has to do a better job of converting its opportunities. Through two games, the Anteaters are shooting a miserable .348 from the field. Losonsky and Darren Moore are tied for the team lead in scoring at 12.0 ppg. Wise and Rembert follow closely at 11.5 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
The Anteaters do not have a win yet on the young season but that is likely to change this evening. Playing at the Bren Events Center is tough, especially for a team that is struggling at the offensive end like Navy is.
