Seeing 20/20: Sims leads Michigan over Florida Gulf Coast
Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - DeShawn Sims scored 20 points and hauled down as many rebounds to lead the 24th-ranked Michigan Wolverines past Florida Gulf Coast, 76-59.
Kelvin Grady posted 14 points and Stu Douglass 12 for Michigan (9-2), which has won four straight, having started the run with a signature victory against then fourth-ranked Duke December 6.
The Wolverines claimed victory by overcoming 15 turnovers and a poor shooting effort, hitting at only a 35.9 percent (23-of-64) clip from the floor.
"You celebrate every win no matter what," Michigan head coach John Beilein said. "I don't think that was our best performance with the turnovers, but I do like the idea that we weren't shy -- that we shot the ball."
Delvin Franklin logged 19 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting and Reed Baker dropped 16 for Florida Gulf Coast (4-8), which had won two of three coming in but most recently dropped a 20-point decision to Butler.
The Eagles also got 11 points and five assists from Ben Vega but committed 26 turnovers and shot just 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the line.
FGCU started the second half with a 7-2 spurt to get within 16 but back-to- back three-pointers by Sims and Douglass pushed the Michigan lead to 24. A quartet of triples for the Eagles cut the lead to 11 with 6:16 to play and a three-point play from Baker got FGCU within single-digits just over a minute later.
Michigan answered with eight straight points, though, to lead by 16 with 3 1/2 minutes to play. A bucket from Derrick O'Neil and a three from Franklin erased five of those points and made it 65-54, but the Wolverines continued to hit shots down the stretch and pulled out the win.
Michigan had FGCU doubled up, 12-6, in the early stages before the Eagles went nearly 10 minutes without a point, allowing for a 27-6 lead before Baker stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer just inside four minutes to play in the first half. The Eagles were able to double that output before the break to trail 39-18 after 20 minutes.
FGCU shot 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the field...Laval Lucas-Perry netted 10 points for Michigan...O'Neil had 11 rebounds and six points for the Eagles...The Wolverines attempted a staggering 42 three-pointers but hit on only 12 of them....FGCU went 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.
