20th-ranked Syracuse dominates St. Francis
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Demetris Nichols poured in a game-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting to guide No. 20 Syracuse past Saint Francis, 83-51, in BCA Invitational action at the Carrier Dome.
Eric Devendorf netted 13 points while Josh Wright had 11 points and nine assists for Syracuse (1-0), which will play Penn on Saturday.
Robert Hines scored a team-high 14 points and Marcus Williams finished with 11 points and six rebounds for St. Francis, which will square off against UTEP on Saturday.
Syracuse used a 13-0 run to establish a 20-5 lead and pull away. Wright jumpstarted the surge with a pair of assists, the first leading to a Darryl Watkins layup before he and Nichols combined for a thunderous alley-oop.
The Terriers clawed back with seven straight points but still trailed 30-17 at intermission.
The Orangemen opened up the second half with a 16-4 burst to put the game away. Nichols led the way with three straight field goals.
Shooting a sizzling 63 percent from the floor in the second half, Syracuse built its advantage to as high as 35.
Paul Harris was a key figure in the victory, posting 10 points and 11 boards for the double-double, and Watkins finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five blocks and five steals.
The Orangemen have won both all-time meetings with St. Francis...The Orange victory win marks the 26th time in 27 seasons in the Carrier Dome that Syracuse has won its home-opener.
