Schlesinger claims medalist honors at Senior Women's Am

Hershey, PA (Sports Network) - Lisa Schlesinger struggled to a 5-over 79 on Sunday, but still earned medalist honors at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

Schlesinger finished the stroke-play portion of the championship at 1-over-par 149.

Ellen Port, a 4-time U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion, posted a 2-over 76 to end in second at plus-2. Three-time winner Diane Lang shot 4-over 78 and ended alone in third at 4-over-par 152.

Both the first and second rounds of stroke play were completed on Sunday. There was a weather delay that last nearly three hours on Saturday at Hershey Country Club and that pushed the completion of the first round into Sunday morning.

Schlesinger played the back nine first on Sunday. She dropped a shot at the 11th, but erased that mistake with a birdie on No. 13. Schlesinger bogeyed the 14th, then faltered to a triple-bogey at 15.

She came back with a birdie at 16, but tripped to another bogey at 17. She made the turn at 4-over for the day.

Schlesinger carded her final birdie at the first. She bogeyed the fourth and ninth, but managed to hang on for medalist honors.

Defending champion Terri Frohnmayer shot 4-over 78 on Sunday and finished tied for 22nd at 11-over-par 159.

There will be an 8-for-5 playoff in the morning with Lynda Case, Maggie Leef, Teresa Cleland, Susan Beaupied, Barbare Byrnes, Denise Desilet, Nancy Kromar and Susan Stewart trying to get one of those last five spots in the match-play portion of the championship.
