Final Score: Central Michigan 30, Miami-Ohio 16
Mount Pleasant, MI (Sports Network) - Zurlon Tipton led the way by rushing 24 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns to propel the Central Michigan Chippewas to a crucial 30-16 victory over the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Ryan Radcliff completed 13-of-23 attempts for 202 yards with a touchdown and interception while under center for the Chippewas (5-6, 3-4 MAC). Jahleel Addae stood out on the defensive side of the ball with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and an interception. The victory kept CMU in the hunt for bowl eligibility, which it can gain with a win over Massachusetts next week in its season finale.
Zac Dysert paced Miami (4-7, 3-4) by going 26-of-43 for 343 yards with a touchdown and interception. Dysert frequently targeted Nick Harwell, who finished the contest with season-highs of 11 receptions and 122 yards. Harwell also reeled in a touchdown catch as he eclipsed the 200-receiving yard mark for the third time in his career. Brison Burris anchored the defense with 14 total stops as the RedHawks' hopes of becoming bowl eligible evaporated.
The Chippewas struck first as Tipton gave them a 7-0 lead at the 1:51 mark of the first quarter with a 12-yard run into the end zone. Miami answered less than a minute later with a 68-yard touchdown pass from Dysert to Harwell that sent the game into the second frame tied up, 7-7.
CMU took back control in the final four minutes of the opening half with a pair of touchdowns. Tipton plunged one-yard into the end zone for his second score of the day to punctuate an impressive eight-play, 83-yard march down the field. After they forced Miami off the field by sacking Dysert on third down, the Chippewas ran the two-minute drill to perfection and Radcliff capped off a 66- yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Connor Odykirk. The late first half scoring drive sent CMU into the intermission on top, 21-7.
The only points of the third quarter came courtesy Kaleb Patterson's 39-yard field goal, which narrowed Miami's deficit to 21-10 with 11:14 left before the final frame.
The RedHawks gained more ground in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when Dysert ran in it himself from a yard out. He was unable to connect with his target on the ensuing two-point conversion, which kept CMU in front by five points.
The Chippewas pushed their lead back up to double-digits when Saylor Lavallii produced a 12-yard touchdown run with 10:28 remaining on the clock.
Neither offense managed to score again, but CMU added two more points when Caesar Rodriguez sacked Dysert in the end zone with just over a minute left to play.
Despite the loss, Miami gained 434 yards of total offense and limited CMU to 386 yards.
