Funk and Sluman claim Legends title
Ridgedale, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred Funk and Jeff Sluman combined to shoot a 6-under 48 on Sunday to claim a 1-stroke victory at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf.
The duo finished the tournament at 20-under-par 159. It was Funk's ninth career victory on the Champions Tour, while Sluman collected his seventh. Sluman also won this event last year along with Brad Faxon.
"We stuck to our game plan, hit a lot of good quality shots and just really didn't make any mistakes today," said Sluman.
The final round was played at the par-54 Top of the Rock Course. It was the first time the Champions Tour played an official event on a par-3 course. The teams played alternate shot for their first nine holes and better ball for their second nine.
Jay Haas and Peter Jacobsen carded a 4-under 50 during their final round to finish in second place at 19-under-par 160.
Craig Stadler and Kirk Triplett shot a 52 to sit alone in third at 14-under. Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry carded a 49 to take fourth at minus-13.
Tom Pernice, Jr. and Bob Tway shared fifth with Morris Hatalsky and Don Pooley at 12-under. Pernice and Tway shot a 1-under 53, while Hatalsky and Pooley carded a 3-under 51 on Sunday.
Haas and Jacobsen entered the final round with a 1-stroke lead, but tripped to bogeys at the second and fourth to fall to 13-under hand the lead to Funk and Sluman at minus-14.
After both teams bogeyed the fifth to remain a shot apart, Haas and Jacobsen birdied the sixth to regain a share of the lead.
The tie was short lived, however, as they later bogeyed the eighth to fall to 14-under and give the outright lead back to Funk and Sluman.
The teams traded birdies at the 10th before Funk and Sluman birdied the 11th to reach 17-under and move two shots clear of Haas and Jacobsen, who answered with a birdie at the 12th to pull back with one.
Both would birdie the 13th before Funk and Sluman regained their 2-stroke lead with their second straight birdie at the 14th.
Haas and Jacobsen fought back with a birdie at the 15th to get back within a stroke at 18-under, but they would get no closer and the teams traded birdies at the 16th before a pair of closing pars handed Funk and Sluman the title.
"The tournament was a lot of fun," Funk said. "We had this little shootout going between Jay and Peter and our group and we just really played well, a lot of quality golf and a lot of key putts."
NOTES: Funk and Sluman earned $230,000 each for the victory ... Sluman became the fifth player to win the tournament with two different partners ... Jim Colbert and Jim Thorpe won the Legends Division with a final score of 11- under-par 118 ... Dale Douglass made the first hole-in-one in the event at the second hole.
