Killmer wins playoff for Players Cup title
Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Chris Killmer parred the fourth playoff hole Sunday to defeat Vince Covello and earn his first victory at the Canadian Tour Players Cup.
Killmer's approach at the fourth extra hole, the par-4 18th at Pine Ridge Golf Club, ran through the green. Covello knocked his second to 40 feet, but Killmer put the pressure on when he chipped his third to a foot.
Covello's birdie putt for the win slid 5 feet by the hole. He missed the par- saving putt coming back, and all Killmer had to do was make a little tap-in for the victory.
He did and collected his first Canadian Tour title.
Killmer and Covello shared a 6-shot lead heading into the final round and weren't threatened all day. They both shot 2-under 69s and finished regulation at 15-under 269.
Killmer grabbed a 3-shot lead with an eagle at the 12th, but Covello birdied the same hole, then birdied 13, 15 and 17 to force the playoff.
David Lang shot a 3-under 68 and took a distant third at minus-10.
Josh Habig (67) and Matt Richardson (68) tied for fourth at 8-under par, followed by Mark Hubbard (67) and Trey Denton (71), who shared sixth at 7- under 277.
NOTES: Killmer pocketed $24,000 for the win...Covello remains winless on the Canadian Tour...This was the fourth consecutive week with a playoff on the Canadian Tour...In five weeks (August 16-19), the Canadian Tour will travel to Ontario for the inaugural Jamieson WFCU Windsor Roseland Charity Classic at Roseland Golf & Curling Club.
