Courtesy of Arena Football League
Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Chicago wide receiver Chris Martin, Spokane wide receiver Raul Vijul and Tampa Bay defensive back Daryon Brutley have been named the JLS Ironman, Russell Athletic Offensive Player and Riddell Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 9 of 2010. In addition to these three awards, the AFL is also highlighting the player who makes the best catch of the week, the playmaker of the week, and the highlight of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 9 goes to Spokane line backer Kevin Mccullough, while Dallas' wide receiver Kenny Henderson has been named the Playmaker of the Week. The Highlight of the Week award has gone to Orlando's kicker Carlos Martinez.
JLS IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Martin (5-11, 190, Washington State) was a major player in Chicago's second victory over the Cleveland Gladiators. Defensively, Martin tallied 3.5 tackles. But it was his offensive performance on special teams that made him shine. Martin returned five kicks for a total of 137 yards. One of those returns was for a whopping 57 yards and a score, helping to propel the Rush to a narrow 52-49 victory. The 57 yard return was his longest of the season.
RUSSELL ATHLETIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Vijil (5-11, 190, Eastern Washington) was QB Kyle Rowley's favorite target in Week 9 action, leading the Shock to a 10 point victory over top-ranked Jacksonville, 67-57. Vijil made 11 catches for 130 yards and seven of Spokane's eight passing touchdowns. His 11 receptions were a personal season high, as were his seven scores.
RIDDELL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brutley (6-0, 185, Northern Iowa), in only his second game with Tampa Bay, proved to be a key addition to the Storm roster. Brutley tallied 12.5 tackles against in-state rival Orlando, a team high. It was also a drastic improvement from his 1.5 tackles tallied in his first game in a Storm uniform versus Bossier-Shreveport in Week 7. Brutley also grabbed one interception for 12 yards and tallied two defended passes in the 62-50 Tampa Bay victory over the Predators.
