Colts owner Irsay checks into rehab

Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has entered a drug rehabilitation facility following his recent arrest on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.

The Colts issued a statement Tuesday, less than 48 hours after Irsay was booked into the Hamilton County (Ind.) Jail after failing a sobriety test and having several bottles of prescription drugs found in his vehicle.

"[Monday], Jim Irsay took the first step toward regaining good health. He voluntarily checked into a highly-respected health care facility and is committed to undergoing the treatment and care necessary to help him meet his challenges head-on. Jim, the Irsay family, and the Colts organization are all deeply appreciative of the incredible outpouring of support and compassion from our fans and the Indiana community."

Irsay was arrested in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel late Sunday night after driving at a slow rate of speed and failing to signal a turn, according to the police report. After failing several sobriety tests, the 54-year-old was taken into custody.

Multiple prescription drugs were found in pill bottles during an inventory search of the vehicle. The drugs were not associated with any of the prescription bottles found.

Irsay was charged with four felony counts of possession of controlled substances.

This isn't Irsay's first battle with drug addiction. The Indianapolis Star reported that he checked into an out-of-state rehab center for a dependency of prescription pain medication in November of 2002.
