NCAA Game Summary - Florida at Vanderbilt|
(Saturday, November 6th)
Final Score: Florida 55, Vanderbilt 14
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - John Brantley threw for 157 yards and two
touchdowns, as the Florida Gators clobbered the Vanderbilt Commodores in SEC
action at Vanderbilt Stadium.
Jordan Reed also saw time under center in the blow out, and promptly threw for
130 yards and one score on 11-of-19 passing. Reed also led the ground game for
Florida (6-3, 4-3 SEC), rushing for 84 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.
Mike Gillislee added 57 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. Chris
Rainey hauled in one of Brantley's touchdown pass, but more importantly the
junior also blocked two punts.
Vandy (2-7, 1-5) also used two quarterbacks, but neither were successful in
the lopsided matchup. Jared Funk threw a touchdown, but finished just 3-of-8
for 35 yards, while Larry Smith threw for only 28 yards on 7-of-18 efficiency.
The first block by Rainey set up Florida's first touchdown midway through the
opening frame. The Gators scored on their second play after Rainey's block, as
Gillislee plunged into the end zone on a three-yard run.
Florida closed out the first quarter with a slim 7-0 advantage, but coach
Urban Meyer's men exploded in the second stanza, scoring 34 straight points.
The first score was a 31-yard pass and catch between Reed and Deonte Thompson
just seconds into the second quarter.
That was quickly followed by Brantley's first touchdown pass, as the signal
caller connected with Rainey on a 40-yard scoring strike.
Less than a minute later the defense got involved in the scoring, as Terron
Sanders returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown. However, the extra point
was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 27-0.
Florida extended its lead to 34-0 late in the first half when Brantley
connected with Frankie Hammond Jr on a 39-yard scoring strike, capping off an
impressive 10-play, 98-yard drive.
Minutes later Rainey blocked his second punt, this time his efforts were
instantly rewarded as Solomon Patton scooped up the ball and returned it 42
yards for a score.
Oddly enough Vanderbilt's first score came on its own blocked punt, as Javon
Marshall recovered the loose ball and scored on a four-yard run.
Florida pushed its lead to 48-7 when Gillislee broke free and scampered down
field for a 43-yard score.
Reed's six-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter gave the Gators an
insurmountable lead at 55-7.
Vandy continued to fight, as Funk hit Jordan Matthews with a six-yard scoring
strike. However, it was far too late for the Commodores to make a magical
comeback, as Florida went on to win by a 41-point margin.
