Sounders' Martins claims Player of the Week honor
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins was named Major League Soccer's Player of the Week on Monday for Week 29 of the 2013 season.
Martins, a Nigeria international, scored his club's first goal and added an assist on Friday as the Sounders collected a 2-0 win over Western Conference rival Real Salt Lake at CenturyLink Field.
Martins set the tone just three minutes into the match when he smashed home a first-time volley before setting up Lamar Neagle's tally later in the opening 45 minutes as the Sounders reached the summit of the overall standings with 49 points.
He is the second Sounders player to nab the award this season, joining Week 12 winner and fellow striker Eddie Johnson.
The MLS Player of the Week award is selected each week by the North American Soccer Reporters. The group consists of members of online, print, television, and radio media.
