Chicago acquires midfielder Thompson from Colorado

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Fire acquired midfielder Wells Thompson from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a conditional draft pick on Monday night.

Thompson, 28, had five goals and four assists in 75 matches for Colorado and helped the Rapids win the 2010 MLS Cup. He was originally drafted in the first round by the New England Revolution in 2007.

During his time with the Revolution, Thompson played 71 regular-season matches and eight in the postseason. He started in the 2007 MLS Cup final, which New England lost to the Houston Dynamo.

"Wells is a player who gives everything he has both on and off the field," said Rapids technical director Paul Bravo. "He's talented and tenacious, and was an important part of our team in the championship run in 2010. We wish him the very best with Chicago."

Thompson will be available Wednesday, when Chicago visits Toronto FC.

"Wells is a steady, dependable player that has proven himself in MLS," Chicago coach Frank Klopas said. "He will provide additional depth and coverage on the wing and in the midfield as we ... make our push for the MLS Cup Playoffs."
