Insight: Guthrie only threw 77 pitches, but Ned Yost went to his bullpen when his starter allowed the first two hitters to reach base in the sixth. Two runs scored in the inning, but Kelvin Herrera did not permit the tying run to score, and Kansas City won, 3-2.

Insight: Two of the three hits Guthrie allowed came in the second, and Baltimore scored on J.J. Hardy's double. Nick Markakis led off the third with a single and that was the final Orioles hit of the game. Kansas City is one win away from its first World Series appearance in three decades.

Guthrie has pitched eight innings and allowed one run twice in his last five starts. He is 11-11 with a 4.35 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 190 and 1/3 innings this season.

Insight: Guthrie also gave up a solo homer to Francisco in the second inning. The right-hander has been superb this year, going 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. He has allowed five homers, however, which could be an issue if he starts letting more runners on base.

Insight: Both sides made concessions in the deal. In the end, the Royals bulked up their offer from two years to three years while Guthrie received a bit less than the $34 million he had originally desired. Guthrie seems like a good fit in KC and should have a chance to be the club's Opening Day starter come April.

Insight: Guthrie was a disaster during his 19-game stint in Colorado at the start of the year (3-9, 6.35 ERA) but was much more successful after he was traded to the Royals (5-3, 3.16 in 14 starts). The veteran will turn 34 in April.
