GAME NOTES: The Citadel Bulldogs play host to the Wofford Terriers in a Southern Conference clash on Saturday night.
Wofford comes in winners of five straight. The Terriers beat Georgia Southern on Thursday night, 74-61, and they sit at 7-3 in SoCon play.
The Citadel has been dreadful of late, losing 13 in a row, and 17 of its last 18 overall. In their last game, also Thursday night, the Bulldogs were defeated by Appalachian State, 54-45, to fall to 0-10 in league play.
Wofford has won five straight in the series, most recently taking a 79-75 overtime victory in Spartanburg on Jan. 9 of this year.
Karl Cochran poured in 29 points to lift the Terriers over Georgia Southern. Lee Skinner recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Spencer Collins added 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Trailing 35-27 at the break, the Terriers shot 64 percent from the field in the second half. Cochran scored 18 of his points after the break, while the Eagles were held to 30.8 percent shooting from the floor, which included a dreadful 1- of-11 showing from behind the 3-point line. Down 52-40 with 12:43 remaining in regulation, Wofford went on a 14-2 run to even the score with just over seven minutes left to play. The Terriers continued their impressive play as they went in front, 68-57, by the 2:07 mark of the second half and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Wofford has displayed a lackluster scoring offense this season, posting just 67.3 ppg on less than 44 percent efficiency from the field, but it has turned things around during its current win streak, averaging 74.4 ppg. Luckily, its outstanding scoring defense (64.4 ppg, tops in the SoCon) has been consistent throughout. Cochran (15.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Collins (14.2 ppg) split the duties as the team's go-to scoring option, with Cochran having drained 46 3- pointers at a 39.3 percent clip. Skinner acts as an anchor in the frontcourt with 10.8 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
Quinton Marshall scored 13 points and Matt Van Scyoc contributed 12 points with five rebounds in the Bulldogs recent loss to Appalachian State.
Brian White checks in at second on the team in scoring, netting an average of 12.3 ppg on 53.5 percent shooting from the floor. Only Matt Van Scyoc has a better scoring rate than White at 15.0 ppg through 35 games. White however, edges out Van Scyoc for the team lead in rebounding, 6.4 rpg to 5.6 rpg. Marshall Harris III leads the Bulldogs with 97 assists. As a collective unit, the Bulldogs are scoring a conference-worst 66.5 ppg while allowing their opponents to net 74.8 ppg.
The losing shows no signs of letting up for the Bulldogs, as they come up against the red-hot Terriers. Expect the visitors to leave with a victory, just like every other conference opponent The Citadel has faced this season.
