GAME NOTES: The semifinal round of the Cancun Challenge finds the Blue Hose of Presbyterian clashing with the Bowling Green Falcons, a first-ever meeting for the programs, at the Aventura Palace Convention Center this afternoon.
Since opening the season with a 102-49 romp over Earlham, the Falcons have dropped three straight decisions. The most recent of those outings took place on Saturday in Missouri, as the team bowed to Saint Louis in a 74-47 final.
Meanwhile, the Blue Hose have just a single win in six attempts thus far, posting an 86-76 victory over Toccoa Falls on Nov. 18. Since then the team has fallen in back-to-back outings versus Old Dominion (69-51) and West Virginia (88-55) as part of this event. All five of Presbyterian's setbacks have come on the road.
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, with the winner going up against the survivor of the Oral Roberts/Georgia Southern matchup, while the losing teams also square off.
Against the Billikens on Saturday, BGSU shot just 33.3 percent from the field, 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line, and had just as many turnovers (18) as made field goals in the 27-point loss at Chaifetz Arena. Spencer Parker was the only Falcons player to score in double figures as he dropped in 13 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the floor.
If not for the win against Earlham, the Falcons would be nowhere near scoring 68.5 ppg and yet they are still coming up 3.0 ppg on the average versus the competition. Parker accounts for 14.3 ppg as a 50.0 percent shooter, although his numbers could be slightly better if not for a 1-of-8 effort on the perimeter and 14-of-23 (.609) at the free-throw line. As a group, Bowling Green is knocking down just 57.3 percent at the charity stripe and 25.0 percent beyond the arc.
The Blue Hose fell behind West Virginia right out of the gate on Saturday afternoon and were never able to recover, shooting just 19-of-48 (.396) from the field and turning the ball over 19 times in the lopsided outcome. Jordan Downing was the lone double-digit scorer for the visitors as he tallied 18 points, while no other player converted more than three field goals. William Truss accounted for 10 of the unit's 28 rebounds, but the squad still cleared just three boards at the offensive end of the floor.
Downing, who is playing 37 minutes per contest, is also the leading scorer for the group with 18.8 ppg, although his accuracy from the floor overall (.377) is actually below his aim beyond the arc (.378) at this stage. As a team, the Hose are generating just 60.8 ppg, but giving up 78.7 ppg.
Even though these teams both have the same number of victories, the Falcons are clearly better, if for no other reason than Presbyterian's offense is lacking so much this season.
