GAME NOTES: The Arkansas State Red Wolves try to keep their perfect record intact as they head to Laramie to challenge the Wyoming Cowboys in non- conference action at Arena Auditorium this afternoon.
With six of their top nine scorers returning from last year's squad, the Red Wolves opened the 2013-14 campaign with a narrow 65-61 victory over Jackson State on Monday night, and then followed that with a more convincing 72-62 decision versus UT Martin two nights later in the home opener.
While ASU has yet to suffer a defeat, Wyoming already has been sent to the loss column, falling to Colorado in Boulder on Wednesday night, 63-58. The setback came after the Cowboys began the new campaign with a 78-60 romp over the UT Martin Skyhawks as well.
As far as the all-time series is concerned, this game represents the very first matchup between the squads.
Kirk Van Slyke scored a team-best 16 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Red Wolves posted the 10-point win over the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin in a non-conference matchup at the Convocation Center three nights ago. Melvin Johnson III tallied 15 points, Cameron Golden 13 and Brandon Reed 10 points for the Red Wolves, while Kendrick Washington came up a point shy of a double-double as he reeled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
After two games, it is Van Slyke who leads the program in scoring with 15.0 ppg, shooting a stellar 66.7 percent from the field. Golden checks in with 14.5 ppg and Johnson accounts for 14.0 ppg, the latter shooting 57.1 percent behind the 3-point line. Defensively, the team has held the opposition to a mere 4-of-29 (.138) shooting beyond the arc.
Limiting Colorado to only eight field goals in the first half, the Cowboys actually led at the break at the Coors Events Center a few nights back, but then the second-half collapse sent Wyoming to the loss column. The Pokes connected on just eight field goals of their own after intermission and 2- of-11 out on the perimeter after hitting 5-of-10 from the outside through the first 20 minutes of action. Josh Adams tallied 15 points and Larry Nance 10 points, to go along with a team-best eight rebounds before fouling out.
Nance is averaging a double-double in the early going with 10 points and 10 rebounds per contest, not to mention accounting for four of the unit's seven blocked shots. Riley Grabau is responsible for 13.0 ppg, shooting 45.5 percent beyond the arc while handing out a team-best eight assists. When it comes to defense, the Cowboys have allowed foes a grand total of only 10 dishes in two games.
Visitors often have trouble playing Wyoming at Arena Auditorium and the Red Wolves should be no different. While ASU has the talent to stay undefeated through the weekend, the Cowboys will have a rowdy crowd behind them.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wyoming 63, Arkansas State 61
