GAME NOTES: The Barclays Center Classic takes center stage on Friday, as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets battle the Ole Miss Rebels.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday to conclude the event, taking on either Penn State or St. John's, depending of the outcomes of Friday's games.

Georgia Tech brings a 5-1 record to Brooklyn, the team winning four of its five home games and taking down both North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State since suffering its lone loss of the season to Dayton on Nov. 20. In addition to the teams it will face in this tourney, the Yellow Jackets will face tough foes in Illinois and Vanderbilt prior to beginning ACC play at Maryland on Jan. 4, 2014.

Ole Miss is a perfect 4-0 on the young season, although any enthusiasm has to be tempered when you consider the team hasn't faced an opponent of significant notoriety just yet. An 84-50 thrashing of North Carolina A&T as part of this event was the Rebels' most recent triumph, and they will face tougher competition in the coming weeks with clashes against Oregon and Dayton taking place prior to the start of SEC action against visiting Auburn on Jan. 9, 2014.

Georgia Tech leads the all-time series with Ole Miss, 11-8, and this is the first meeting between the two since 1964.

The Yellow Jackets don't really have that one player that causes opposing teams to lie awake at night worrying about how to defend him, but rather relies on a balanced approach that has five guys averaging between 8.8 and 14.8 ppg. Trae Golden leads the way at the upper end of the ledger, and he also serves as the team's primary playmaker (3.5 apg). Robert Carter, Jr. and Daniel Miller combine to grab 17.7 caroms per contest, and the team boasts significant margins in both scoring (+12.0) and rebounding (+9.0). In the 76-59 win over Mississippi Valley State, Carter, Jr. notched a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Golden and Quinton Stephens chipped in with 10 points apiece. Miller came up with a dozen boards, helping Georgia Tech collect 49 loose balls compared to only 28 for the Delta Devils. The Yellow Jackets shot 50.8 percent from the floor, but went just 9-of-17 at the free-throw line (.529).

The Rebels have performed well at both ends of the court this season, specifically on defense as they allow just 64 ppg with foes shooting a mere 36.2 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from 3-point range. Offensively, they are putting up a robust 84 ppg, but do so on 44 percent field goal efficiency, which includes a 37.5 percent showing from beyond the arc. Jarvis Summers paces the squad with 17.3 points and 3.8 assists per game, while Derrick Millinghaus adds 15.5 ppg and Marshall Henderson 14.0 ppg. Aaron Jones spearheads the team's rebounding effort with 8.8 rpg, and he also blocks more than two shots per tilt. Jones notched his first career double-double in the recent win over NC A&T, tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Millinghaus scored 16 points, the Rebels making good on 50.9 percent of their total shots, which included 10 treys. Ole Miss turned 21 turnovers into 39 points, and the team dominated the paint to the tune of a 32-12 scoring advantage.

This should be an entertaining game between two teams that, while not likely as good as their early records might have you believe, hope to make some noise in their respective conferences this season. The nod goes to the Rebels, as they appear to be a bit more potent at the offensive end.
