GAME NOTES: The Florida State Seminoles will close out a six-game homestand on Monday night when they take on the ULM Warhawks in non-conference action at Donald L. Tucker Center.
ULM has picked up right where it left off in 2011-12 when it won just three games. Its only win in six tries this season came at home against Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 10, 68-61 in overtime. The Warhawks got back to their losing ways last Thursday with a humiliating 68-39 home setback against Southern University.
Florida State came into the season with high expectations and a No. 25 preseason ranking, but after a promising 4-1 start, it suffered a three-game losing streak, all at home, dropping decisions to Minnesota (77-68), Mercer (61-56) and Florida (72-47). The Seminoles were able to redeem themselves in their latest outing, moving back above .500 with a 91-59 rout of Maine on Dec. 9.
The Seminoles won the only other meeting between these two programs, 85-62, in December of 2005.
It has been a rough start for the Warhawks, as they are shooting just 36.5 percent from the floor in averaging a mere 53.7 ppg, which ranks above only four other teams in Division I. They put forth their worst effort to date against Southern the last time out, making a lowly 12-of-48 shots from the field (.250) in the 29-point loss. Jayon James tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while R.J. McCray scored a game-high 13 points albeit on just 3-of-11 from the field. On the season, Amos Olatayo puts up a team- high 13.0 ppg, although he's missed two of the past three games due to injury. McCray and James each put up 9.8 ppg, while James adds team-bests in rebounds (7.2 rpg) and assists (4.2 apg). ULM hasn't done much right this season, as it gets outscored by 18 ppg, loses the battle on the boards by 7.7 rpg, and sports a turnover margin of minus-3.2.
After several down games, Florida State finally put forth a balanced effort in the 32-point victory over Maine, making 32-of-73 shots from the field (including 11-of-24 from 3-point range), holding Maine to a lowly 33.9 percent shooting, and winning the turnover battle, 19-7. Michael Snaer wasn't at his best from the field (6-of-18), but he still finished with a game-high 19 points, adding six rebounds and two steals. Aaron Thomas came off the bench to score 15 points, Terry Whisnant tacked on 14 points, and Okaro White finished with 13 points and seven boards. On the season, the Seminoles are shooting 45.9 percent from the field and they have a scoring margin of plus-5.3, but their margins have not been great in the rebounding battle (plus-0.0) or in the turnover game (plus-0.3). Snaer has struggled from the field (.376), but thanks to impressive marks from 3-point range (.409) and from the foul line (.816), he leads the team with 14.2 ppg. White brings 12.9 ppg and 5.6 rpg to the table, while Terrance Shannon adds 9.9 ppg and 6.4 rpg.
The Seminoles have had their share of struggles in recent weeks, but after a dominating performance in their last game, they have to be feeling better about themselves, especially with an underwhelming ULM squad coming to town. This one could be over by halftime.
