Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Obi tallied 17 points to lead the Rice Owls to a nail-biting 67-66 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos in the consolation game of the Cable Car Classic at Leavey Center.
Obi went 8-of-9 from the field for the Owls (3-4) and brought in nine rebounds. Seth Gearhart recorded 15 points, while Max Guercy and Keith Washington both added 11 points.
Evan Roquemore notched 17 points, including 3-of-7 from the perimeter for the Broncos (2-4). Brandon Clark contributed 15 points on 6-of-12 from the floor. Jerry Brown added another 13 points and nine rebounds.
Rice got out to a 39-29 lead at halftime on the heels of an excellent 17-of-25 (68 percent) field goal shooting performance in the first half.
In the second half, however, the Owls only managed to shoot a miserable 27.8 percent from the field, and gave their opponent a chance to climb back into the game. The Owls saved themselves by converting 17-of-23 attempts from the charity stripe. The Broncos pulled ahead by one with seven seconds left in the game on a Clark layup, but a Washington layup at the other end in the final second secured the late win for Rice.
The Broncos lost despite outrebounding the Owls, 36-27. They also scored more points in the paint (34-30), points off turnovers (15-10) and second-chance points (20-7).
