Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mitch McCarron tallied 34 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Metropolitan State Roadrunners to an 87-76 triumph over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in an NIT Season Tip-Off consolation matchup at the McKale Memorial Center.
McCarron shot 11-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the foul line for Metropolitan State (3-1). Brandon Jefferson was also outstanding with 28 points and eight boards, while Jamal McClerkin added 10 points.
For Fairleigh Dickinson (1-4), Sidney Sanders, Jr. logged 22 points and seven assists, while Mustafaa Jones scored 15 points on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Scooter Gillette and Matt MacDonald added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Metropolitan State opened up a comfortable 49-33 advantage at intermission behind 56.3 percent field goal shooting in the first half. Fairleigh Dickinson shot 50 percent but attempted eight fewer field goals.
The Knights closed the gap in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the floor, but they never got closer than six points of the lead.
The Roadrunners outscored the Knights at the foul line, 23-11, and won the rebounding battle, 35-17.
